The Diplomatic Security Foundation

2009 Fact Sheet

The Diplomatic Security Foundation (DSF) was founded in 1995 as a charitable, non-profit organization to provide financial assistance to Diplomatic Security* (U.S. Department of State) personnel as well as their foreign affairs/law enforcement counterparts both at home and abroad.  DSF is specifically designed to provide monetary support (usually one-time grants) to persons/families that have some nexus to DS.  DSF has no membership, membership dues and does not sell products. DSF is a separate entity from the Diplomatic Security Special Agents Association (DSSAA).

DSF is a registered 501 (c) (3) charity, and all contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.  The funds raised by DSF are utilized in a variety of ways including assistance donations and programs, including but not limited to:

  • survivor payments to family members of DS personnel, local guards and foreign police officers who lose their lives while performing duties associated with the protection of U.S. facilities and personnel abroad.
  • contributions to local police officers/families from whom DS receives support, in the event of death or serious illness.
  • contributions to memorial services, flowers, organizations as bequests of DS personnel who have lost members of their immediate families.
  • contributions to trust/scholarship funds for families of DS personnel who are killed/die of illness while on duty.
  • unexpected needs (medical costs, natural disaster losses, etc).
  • a DSF scholarship program for college/college-bound students.

All donations from DSF are gifts and require no repayment.  Anyone from the extended global DS “family” may be considered for a donation, per review by the DSF Board of Directors, which is composed of active, retired and former DS personnel. All Board members are unpaid volunteers; with the exception of the Foundation Manager, which is a paid, part-time position.  The current board is composed as follows:

*About Diplomatic Security: As the Department of State's security and law enforcement arm, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security does not formulate foreign policy. It plays another essential yet behind-the-scenes role: To provide a safe and secure environment for the conduct of U.S. foreign policy. Not only is Diplomatic Security a unique organization in the foreign affairs community--it is the only law enforcement agency with representation in nearly every country in the world. www.state.gov/m/ds/
