| Tradition Continues: DS Foundation Golf Tournament Honors Mike Considine By Taylor A. Dlouhy, DS Office of Public Affairs (From the August DS Newsletter)
On a cloudless day in July, members of the Diplomatic Security (DS) community gathered with family and friends to honor the life of Special Agent Mike Considine at the 18th Annual Diplomatic Security Foundation Golf Tournament. The tournament, which was held at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Virginia on July 7, 2008, was renamed three years ago in memory of Mike Considine. “Mike would be thrilled to see how the tournament has helped the DS community,” said Mike’s sister, Mary Considine, with a beaming smile. “It is truly amazing that so many people throughout DS thought so much of my brother that they’ve honored him by dedicating the golf tournament to his life and his hard work in DS.”
During the past two years, the tournament has generated more than $100,000 in donations for the law enforcement community internationally. This year alone nearly $33,000 in donations have already been made. Collected monies are given to support surviving family members of deceased law enforcement officers, to defray medical expenses for cancer treatment, and to establish an annual college scholarship fund for children of current and former DS employees. The scholarship fund’s second recipient, Ashton Massey, the granddaughter of retired DS Special Agent Chris Leibengood, will be using the $2,500 scholarship towards her tuition at Duke University this fall. Massey was selected from a number of candidates whose applications were reviewed by a special DS Foundation committee.
“The Diplomatic Security Foundation truly gives back to the community,” said Walt Deering, chairman of the tournament. “It feels great to work on an event such as this one because I know it’s for a worthy cause.”
The highlight of this year’s tournament was a hole-in-one made by Patrick Sams, a local Maryland resident, on the par three 17th hole, a feat not easily accomplished by even the most seasoned golfer. For his stellar shot, Sams won a four-night, three-day, all-expense-paid vacation to Kona, Hawaii. Numerous awards for other accomplishments on the course were presented as well, including prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, and the straightest drive. Following the tournament, participants gathered for lunch and a raffle. Prizes were donated by sponsors Toyota Motor Sales, General Electric, STG, Inc. and others. The grand prize, two round-trip business-class tickets to any European destination, were contributed by Lufthansa Airlines. “The sponsorships we receive are what make the tournament possible,” said Deering, who noted that this year’s event netted nearly $45,000 in proceeds.
Special thanks go to the organizers of the tournament and all of the participants who showed their support for the Diplomatic Security Foundation and its cause. Founded in 1995, the Diplomatic Security Foundation is a charitable, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial support to assist members of the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service and other colleagues in the law enforcement and foreign affairs communities.
Planning for next year’s tournament is already underway. The 19th Annual Diplomatic Security Foundation Mike Considine Golf Tournament will be held at Lansdowne Resort on June 29, 2009. For more information, please visit the Foundation’s Web site at www.ds-foundation.org.
