the Diplomatic Security Newsletter published by the DS Public Affairs Office.

"SPECIAL AGENT'S 135-MILE ULTRAMARATHON TO BENEFIT DS FOUNDATION"

Diplomatic Security Special Agent (SA) Gregg Geerdes is participating in this year's Badwater Ultramarathon. Recognized globally as "the world's toughest foot race," this legendary event pits up to 90 of the world's toughest athletes, runners, triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers against one another and the elements. Covering 135 miles (217km) non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA in temperatures up to 130F (55c), it is the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet.  (for more info about the race, see the Badwater website: www.badwater.com.)

SA Geerdes recently returned from a one-year tour in Iraq serving as a Diplomatic Security High Threat Protection Special Agent.  Since returning he has completed three 100-mile races in preparation for the Badwater race.  To make the most of his challenge, Gregg has designated the Diplomatic Security Foundation (DSF) as his charity.

  Note from Gregg:

The money raised from this effort will go towards the Diplomatic Security Foundation which provides timely financial support and charitable contributions to members of the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service, security professionals, and other colleagues in the law enforcement and foreign affairs communities.  This Foundation is near and dear to my heart, especially when I consider all the challenges we face around the world.  I want to run this race:

  • In honor of my family for supporting me during my tour.
  • In recognition of everyone who has accepted and continues to accept difficult assignments to include working in one of the most dangerous places in the world supporting U.S. diplomacy and rebuilding Iraq.
  • In support of all my fellow agents serving around the world.
  • And as a tribute to those agents and security personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives while serving their country (John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends").

Your donation (100% tax deductible) to this cause is very important, whatever you can give will help! I truly appreciate your support and I will keep you posted on my progress. Thank you so much for your time and support as I take on the challenge of a life time!

Yours truly, Gregg Geerdes
